Pain after amputation
نویسنده
چکیده
Amputation of a body part, whether as a result of trauma or surgical intervention, is almost always associated with awareness of, and sensations referred to, the missing body part. These sensations were first noted by Ambroise Pare, a French military surgeon in the middle of the 16th century. Mitchel first used the term `phantom' in 1871 from his observations and medical studies of the American civil war. Three phenomena occur after amputation -(i) phantom sensation, (ii) stump pain and (iii) phantom pain. While limbs are most commonly involved, the same problems can occur with teeth, breast and rectum.

Prolonged membrane potential depolarization in cingulate pyramidal cells after digit amputation in adult rats
The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) plays an important role in higher brain functions including learning, memory, and persistent pain. Long-term potentiation of excitatory synaptic transmission has been observed in the ACC after digit amputation, which might contribute to plastic changes associated with the phantom pain. Here we report a long-lasting membrane potential depolarization in ACC neu...

Aim and Background: More than 50% of patients suffer from phantom limb pain after amputation. This study was conducted to identify the effect of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing on phantom limb pain in patients with amputation. Methods and Materials: This quasi experimental study was performed in Yasuj City between 2012 to 2014. A total of forty (40) patients suffering from pha...
متن کاملAlteration of neuronal activity after digit amputation in rat anterior cingulate cortex.
Phantom limb pain is experienced by nearly 50 - 80% of the patients following limb amputation. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a part of the limbic system that is an essential component in mediating the affective and emotional component of pain responses. To explore the role of ACC in the phantom limb pain, we recorded evoked excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs), cortical network a...
متن کاملContinued Sciatic Blockade for Phantom Limb Pain
Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) is an excruciating type of pain that gives a sensation of the continued presence of an amputated limb. Physicians have used many methods and drugs to treat PLP. We present a case of continued sciatic nerve block performed for PLP that developed after a traumatic amputation. We conclude that infusing a local anesthetic via a perineural sciatic catheter effectively treated...
متن کاملSciatic Neuroma Presenting Forty Years After Above-Knee Amputation
We report a case of a sciatic neuroma presenting forty years after above knee amputation. Patients developing neuroma following a limb amputation can present with stump pain which is commonly resistant to medical intervention. The length of interval from the initial injury to presentation is widely variable. Diagnosis relies on clinical suspicion and accurate assessment, radiological imaging an...
